ERCOT Winter Outlook

How Propane Keeps Texans Safe During Grid Challenges

Published on December 19, 2024

Winter is knocking, and for Texans, that often brings a little anxiety about the electric grid. ERCOT (the Electric Reliability Council of Texas) has released its winter outlook, and while they've worked hard to make improvements since Winter Storm Uri in 2021, there’s still some reason to stay vigilant.

ERCOT's Winter Warning: A Quick Breakdown

ERCOT Energy Demand

ERCOT Energy Demand

Here’s the gist of ERCOT’s outlook: Texas could see extreme cold spells this winter, similar to those we've experienced in recent years. While average winter temperatures might be trending warmer, the frequency of bone-chilling cold snaps is rising. In fact, ERCOT noted that the current weather setup is eerily similar to what we saw during Uri.

Even though significant progress has been made to fortify the grid—like weatherizing power plants and boosting infrastructure—the reality is our growing demand for electricity makes the grid more vulnerable. Last January, we hit a record winter peak demand of over 78,400 megawatts, and the grid is expected to be put to the test again.

ERCOT’s message is clear: While they’re working to keep the lights on, Texans should be prepared for potential grid challenges this winter.

Propane to the Rescue

If you’re wondering how to keep your home safe, warm, and functional when the power grid struggles, propane is your answer. Here’s why propane is a winter superhero for Texans:

  1. Power When the Grid Can't Deliver
With a propane-powered generator, you’re not at the mercy of the electric grid. These generators kick in when the power goes out, keeping your home warm and your appliances running smoothly.

  2. Off-the-Grid Energy Independence
Propane is stored onsite in tanks, so it’s ready to go when you need it—no worrying about power line failures or long utility outages. As long as your tank is full, you’re in control.

  3. Heat That Works in Extreme Cold
Propane heaters and furnaces perform exceptionally well during freezing temperatures. Unlike electric heating systems, they don’t rely on a vulnerable grid to keep your home cozy.

  4. Versatile and Portable
Whether it’s a propane space heater, water heater, or even your cooktop, propane gives you flexibility. Plus, its portability makes it perfect for rural homes or areas where grid reliability is lower.

  5. Eases Grid Strain
By using propane for heating, cooking, or backup power, you’re reducing your household’s demand on the electric grid. This helps avoid widespread outages and keeps the whole system running more smoothly.

  6. Cleaner Energy Choice
Propane is one of the cleanest-burning fuels out there. It’s a great choice for staying warm while keeping your environmental footprint in check.
